Why doesn’t Britain invest in Britain?
Following the money from UK savings, through pensions and investment funds, to what actually gets built and grown — using only the officially-sourced figures already on this site's pensions and capital-markets pages.
UK savings, in pensions and investment funds
Across private-sector DB (£1,068bn), the Local Government Pension Scheme (£402bn) and DC master trusts (£208bn) alone — three genuinely different pension arrangements, not directly additive into one clean total because they use different valuation bases and dates, but together indicating well over £1.5 trillionof funded pension assets under UK trustees' and managers' control. See the pensions pagefor each figure's own source and date.
UK assets vs overseas assets
Of the two pension arrangements that publish a UK-vs-overseas split, both invest the large majority of their assets outside the UK:
17%
of LGPS assets in UK listed equities, gilts, infrastructure and private equity combined (partial measure — see the pensions page)
15.5%
of DC master trust default-fund assets invested in the UK
UK companies — who actually owns them now
UK pension funds' direct ownership of UK-listed shares has collapsed — from a peak of 32.4% in 1992 (and 6.4% back in 1963) to just 1.6% today. Overseas investors now own 58.8% of UK-quoted shares. See the full time series and its methodological breaks on the capital markets page.
Capital formation — business investment
Whatever the channel, the measure that ultimately matters for future productivity is how much UK businesses actually invest — shown here as a share of GDP, 1976 to present (see the 50 Years of Britain page for the full context).
Business investment as a share of GDP (chain-volume basis)
Business investment was 10.9% of real GDP as of the latest quarter — a figure that has been persistently lower than most G7 peers for over a decade.

International comparison — is the UK unusual?
OECD data lets us compare pension-system size and home bias across peer countries — with real, stated caveats about comparability (scope, DB/DC mix and methodology all vary by country; see each chart's source for the full detail).
Pension assets, % of GDP
The UK's funded pension system is large relative to GDP by international standards, but that scale has not translated into a large domestic-investment share.

Pension assets invested abroad, % of total
Among the countries that publish this measure, the UK invests a broadly similar share of pension assets abroad to Canada and Japan — the common assumption that Britain is uniquely 'home-averse' is not straightforwardly supported by this specific measure.

How this page is built, and what "evidence class" means here
This page does not introduce any new statistic — every figure is one already published, with its own evidence class, on the pensions and capital marketspages. What is new here is the SEQUENCE — UK savings → allocation → share ownership → investment → international comparison — which is UK Stat Pack's own editorial framing (F — Interpretation / independent analysis), built to be checkable at every step rather than asserted as a single official conclusion. Correlation between any two steps here is not evidence of causation between them.
