Official evidence. The Environment Agency bathing water profile for Southsea East records a Poor annual classification for 2025 and 34 pollution risk warnings during the season. Over the 2022–2025 assessment period the profile states sewage debris was NOT noted at this site, while litter was observed on 91% of visits. Named short-term pollution risks are tide, rainfall, urban drainage and occasional Canoe Lake discharge.
Methodology and limits. Annual classification pools four years of sampling. Pollution risk warnings are short-term forecasts, not measurements of a discharge having occurred. "Sewage debris not noted" refers to visual assessment at this monitoring point and does not rule out discharges elsewhere in the harbour.
Public perception — not evidence
Photographs of discoloured harbour water circulate widely on local social media and are frequently described as raw sewage. Those posts are not evidence of what the water contained.
